It is here you can go back to the early days of pioneers who used paddle steamers to carry their farm produce from inland areas of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, to be then loaded onto railway carriages to be carried to Port Elliot by rail for loading onto wooden sailing ships for delivery around Australia and the world. You will also find located at Goolwa, Signal Point, an information and display centre of the exploits of both Aboriginal Australians and early European settlements in the region. If you are an aquatic person, the area offers both sea and lake facilities from surfing, sailing, water skiing, swimming, and splendid walks on usually clean sand, with fishing and cockling when in season. Several shops offer hiring facilities for both aquatic equipment and clothing. For those who like fine dining or bistro style meals, numerous cafe and restaurants can be found in the area with wineries offering tastings and meals as well. For the golfer, South Lakes Golf Course is considered one of the finest in South Australia. Other courses are also available in the area.
